From Program and Portfolio to Projects

Yesterday’s elevator story is an example of why we should pay attention to and identify the problem. Most customers just think about the solution, before understanding the real problem.

However, understanding the problem and coming up with the right solution is what we mainly do in the portfolio and program management systems. The result is the idea for a project. That project creates a certain solution for that problem.

Those of us working in the project management system are not dealing with selecting the right solution for the main problem. It’s already selected. What matters here is to understand the problem we’re going to solve, and align ourselves with that.
